Happy New year.
Have January posts about veganuary versus regenuary been done to death? Food manufacturers take advantage of veganuary to promote the UPF vegan products they churn out. They make higher profits than they would if they switched to using high welfare meat and poultry for their non vegan ranges. If you're vegan, why would you give your money to a company that's happy producing sausages from low welfare pork? It's a similar story with restaurants that have vegan items on their menu and continue to buy low welfare meat. Reforming the food system isn't about reformulated fake meat. Regenuary was set up to make people think about where their food comes from, which can only be a good thing. I'll return to this subject later in the year.
I sometimes find it hard to believe that I’ve been writing on here, every week, rain or shine, at home or on holiday. Last week was the exception; with a chest infection and general malaise I gifted myself a week off. I've got lots planned for this year including some exciting interviews, more farm and producer stories, and market visits.
Thank you if you've recently subscribed, I'm thrilled to have you here. It’s lovely to get messages like this; thank you so much Sarah:-
‘I do look forward to reading your posts. Your writing is so engaging and immediate. I almost feel that I’m there, looking over your shoulder; seeing, tasting and learning (always!)’
Sometimes on Substack I feel as if I’m back in the classroom, yearning to win that coveted gold star. It's really helpful to know what you like to read.
So, would you take a few seconds to answer a few questions? I promise that it won’t take long. If there is anything else you'd like to suggest, please just add a comment. And let me know what wins me that gold star.
I’ve been reading through the names of everyone who’s subscribed. I look forward to getting to know you and reading your comments this year.
At the end of this week I'll be attending the Oxford Real Farming Conference, and hope to report back. If you're going, or you know someone who's attending please do let me know.
See you next week!
Kind regards
Cheryl
Brilliant point about vegan, vegan UPFs and low welfare meat.
As far as length goes, it depends on the topic. I have a longer attention span for some things, less for others. And, like all of us, I can be overloaded in general with content to read across many platforms (my favorite being hard copy books and magazines!) so sometimes I simply can't figure out what to read where and so shorter pieces are more likely to be read by me. On frequency, sometimes with Substack subscriptions, if I get things too frequently, I start to tune out. I'm more likely to pay attention if it isn't quite so frequent--but that's just me. And with the category of what I like best I genuinely enjoy ALL the categories, I can't choose so my vote would be to continue with that diversity. I'm glad you are feeling better. Keep up the fun and interesting work!
