Absolutely beautiful writing, Cheryl. I just quoted that Wendell Barry poem in my last post too; it’s lovely, isn’t it, and so appropriate for the Solstice.

Wishing you a restful break and I look forward to reading more from you in the New Year.

Thank you so much; great minds. I bought the writing prompts book you recommended btw. A very happy new year to you too x

Oh my goodness I didn’t realise that YOU were the Cheryl on Mark’s writing call 😊. I really love your substack—always so interesting and well researched. Can’t wait to hear you read a prompt in the future. And I also love that in this community we ca actually connect IRL albeit virtually 💕

The book is fun—a great mix of silly and more serious prompts that get you out of the “usual”. I hope you enjoy it!

Aw love that you included little Agnes. Hope that Robin doesn’t hurt itself. Love how you’ve written about tea making before the light. I have a poem on this somewhere. About the first bird brave enough to pierce the dawn.

Beautiful writing about the solstice. I had this rat problem, I live next to a river and when we had the chickens as well we inadvertently ended up with a rat family as well. We had our bird feeder outside our living room window. One day I looked outside for the goldfinch and instead found 8 rats in a celebratory circle round the bird feeder having breakfast. Our bird feeder has lain empty for a while now.

I can so clearly picture your rat party! Those fat balls used for bird food...they're known in the 'rodent disposal' world as rat balls.
