A thought: A. officianalis is non-native in Britain, so perhaps the idea that it's exotic might be that we never learned to eat it from the wild as the slender, spindly little stalks of new growth that shove up beneath last year's prickly fern-bushes on Mediterranean hillsides.

This is a great read. Asparagus is delicious! And boiling it for 20 minutes. NO!
I'm thinking that like many vegetables it's possible that asparagus was a tougher eat back then. Either that or it was boiled to death!
