Love cherries but as your article points out there are so few grown here now. Such a shame. We do buy from roadside stalls when we see them. Thanks you for this interesting history.

Cherries are my favorite fruit. And I remember those giant cherry trees, my grandmother had a few of those in her dacha in Ukraine and I remember climbing them as a kid. They were cut down, I don't remember why.

Great post! And thank you for the shoutout :) !

Thank you for sharing such a sweet memory. Always sad when fruit trees are cut down.

Thanks for a supergood post. Came for the tomatoes , lingered over cherries, subscribing now. I'm on a campaign locally in Sussex to encourage people to plant small fruit trees in their gardens and for the council to plant community orchards. We've had pigeon fun with our cherry tree and finally settled in CD discs as snatch-deterrent. Mmmmm, luscious cherries. Such a short season and a beautiful lesson in eating seasonally and learning to do without certain lovely things.
