I live near two or three farmers market in San Francisco, and I’m telling you it is going to work! The biggest fanciest is packed every day on the weekend, and the midweek markets are booming too. The substrate is a mess of NGO’s with overlapping duties and obligations and individual farmers with all their concerns
are right in there too.
The City also has a program where you can pick up staple food at a weekly dispensary , where you can take as many cabbages as you can carry!
We have several small scale very local markets in worthing. One run by a local free paper (makes sense as a model, something of a collab that could be modelled elsewhere). One run by the local eco activists group. Sadly, Worthing main market continues to be a space mostly for cheap clothes and household goods, and a big stall of fruit and veg brought in via usual channels ( Dutch agribusiness imports). It's very frustrating that these markets - and even the desire for quality local food - is still so heavily coded as middle class and as a luxury side issue. Long way to go in UK.
I think that all farmer's markets share similar concerns and politics, but some are more appreciated and better received than others. In a few things the US is way ahead of us. A vegetable dispensary is awesome 👌
Pressing ‘like’ doesn’t feel quite right. Substack needs an ‘agree’ button!
Such a great piece
