We stopped eating farmed salmon years ago but the shops are still full of it. Does boycotting really have impact? Hats off to anyone trying to use wild salmon but demand would exceed supply if we all tried it. I don’t know what the answer is - except to be vegetarian
Farmed salmon is an absolute NO for me for so many reasons. Simply put, it's a product and not real food at all. Thank you for this important piece today, Cheryl.
Hi Cheryl and Caroline, I devoured your article with great interest. Thank you! We live in Italy and had stoped eating farmed salmon altogether. Then found this unusual Swiss Alps salmon farm about an hour from us, over the border. We have been buying all our salmon here. What are your thoughts? https://swisslachs.ch/en/alpine-farming/ No chemicals, antibiotics or fish escape. I fee like the fish may be well treated and healthy in their constantly circulating water. I'd really love to hear what you think about this and if you think I'm missing an impact that could make this unhealthy for the fish, humans, or environment. When we found it, we felt like we'd struck a gold mine!
Thanks Lolly, I'll take a look, and forward to Caroline. As she says, the real issue is the feed. I'm going to edit the piece to add recommended fish to eat
Hmm, ok I will investigate more on the feed. It says “This fish feed is free of ethoxyquin and is manufactured in France.” But I think it’s not clear where it’s originating and what it is. Thank you so much for responding!
Wowee! I stopped eating farmed salmon a while ago for vague reasons but MY GOODNESS, now I feel immensely informed and a bit militant about it. Thanks for this brilliantly put together masterclass on making this issue understandable for those of us with just a smidgen of knowledge about it x
I don’t eat fish but this is very interesting.

Not eating any fish is one solution, or you could eat fish and shellfish that are sustainably sourced. Have a look at Sole of Discretion's website.

If it contains fish meal that's the problem. And it might include palm oil.
I will ask about all these things. Thank you so much for pointing me to the specifics, Cheryl! You’re the best!
